RESEARCH: TRAILERS

How to make the perfect trailer:

Action

  •  "In a world ..." before those ironically grandiose E4 continuity announcements, all you needed was a strong, sonorous voiceover to set the tone for any big-budget actioner. Nowadays, you have to be more inventive. Try assembling fake news footage into a glitchy, distorted montage, and be sure to include words like "epidemic", "catastrophic" and "unexplained". The Cloverfield crowd will go apeshit.
  •  You haven't got much time to introduce your characters, so aim to sum each one up with a single line of stereotypical dialogue. Loose cannon? "I don't take orders from nobody!" Nerdy scientist? "You don't understand! It's simply not possible!" Female character? "I'll wait for you."
  •  When it comes to music, the old standards – please rise, Carmina Burana – just won't cut it any more. Dubstep is increasingly becoming a viable alternative, with sub-Skrillex warblings lazily plastered over trailers for films as disparate as franchise smash-'em-up Transformers: Dark Of The Moon and second world war race-relations epic Red Tails.
  •  Don't give too much away. Offer only brief glimpses of your most impressive CGI set pieces, accompanied by a quick fade-out and that irritating foghorn noise (or "BRRRRRRAHHHHMM" as it's become known) from the Inception soundtrack.
  •  Single words written massively across the screen are more impactful than whole sentences, so break your tagline up into its component parts and sprinkle them throughout the trailer. It doesn't matter if they're so far apart that nobody can piece together the meaning; chances are, they're not paying attention anyway.
  •  You don't want to blow your load too quickly, so take a brief pause for thought just before the climax and let one of your characters say something witty. Good luck bettering Jason Statham's timeless words from the new Expendables 2trailer: "I now pronounce you man and knife."
  • Don't forget, the title is the bit you want people to remember. Put aside at least ten seconds at the end for an agonisingly slow reveal.

RESEARCH: JURASSIC WORLD CASE STUDY ON MARKETING

Today in class, we looked at Gareth Lowrie's presentation of the marketing campaign for Juarassic World (Universal Pictures) in order to comment on the way what a trailer forms part of the whole distribution strategy.

RESEARCH: BFI TALK

Today, I went to a talk at the British Film Institute (BFI). The talk was by Geoff Andrews and was called; A passion for cinema: Geoff Andrews encounters with film and filmmakers.
The talk was about Andrew's experiences in the film industry, and gave me a more insightful look into the industry. I also got some useful tips during this talk. He spoke about how you cannot have a film that will please everybody, so you need to look at your target audience throughly since there will be people who do not like your film.

RESEARCH: CODES AND CONVENTIONS

Today in class I made a trailer on FilmEducation. This helped me understand the codes and conventions of a trailer more.

We were given footage from the film die hard and a choose of 6 soundtracks. We then created the trailer by choosing what footage and sound we would use.

To see my trailer I made click here!
While making this trailer, I took care in making sure the music and footage work together in order to create a climax

The type of audience that would be attracted to see A Good Day To Die Hard, are people who enjoy fast pace action films. Therefore the trailer I made would attract them as I included fast pace action shots, which includes things such as jumping out of windows.

After I had completed my trailer, I watched the official one (found HERE) and looked at the similarities, one of which being on how we had the same opening shot from the movie. The view in the door being opened. I continued to compare the two trailers and noticed in the official, the trailer started off slow and saved most action scenes until the end, increasing the pace of the trailer.

MAKING MY BLOG HEADER

Using the website befunky.com I created my blog header.
To do this i found a image of film covers on google. I found the image below, filled with film covers from a variety of different genres.

I then edited the image, by making the colour de-saturate slightly by adding a filter of 'old photograph'. I then added light patterns at the bottom of the header. I then added the title of 'Demi Collins A2 BLOG'

I then stretched the header and cropped the top in order for it to fit perfectly as a header to my blog.

RESEARCH: CODES AND CONVENTIONS OF YOUR CHOSEN GENRE

Today I did a quiz on the Film Educator website. The quiz was on film codes and conventions which helped me think carefully about what I knew about the genre. This will help me when I answer question 1 of the evaluation questions.

RESEARCH: GOOGLE DOCS GROUP

A google docs group was set up. This lets us communicate our ideas on one document that everyone in the group can access and edit. We use this during class, as when someone types one thing on the document it appears on everybody's. This saves everyone writing down the same thing on different pages.

RESEARCH: WHATSAPP GROUP CHAT

I created a whatsapp chat for my group. That way we could all communicate ideas with each other when outside of lessons.

BRIEF

We have decided to do brief 2, a promotion package for a new film, to include a teaser trailer, together with

  • a film magazine front cover, featuring the film
  • a poster for the film

RESEARCH: EXEMPLAR WORK

Today in class we looked at the brief for making a trailer, we looked at the meaning of a teaser trailer and compared it to a theatrical trailer which ranges from 2-3 minutes.

We then in class looked at the OCR guidance.
I then looked at the ocrmediastudies.weebly.com  and looked at a few of there examples which could help me for my trailer, magazine cover and poster. I looked at Cameron's work

TRELLO

I have set up a trello in order to help with my organisation over the next year. This way I will know what I have done and what I still have left to do.
