Evaluation Question 1: GENRE CONVENTIONS

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of reals media productions?

To answer the question above, I have annotated my film trailer with the genre codes and conventions.

We annotated as a group, and incase it is hard for the examiner to determine who did what, here are some points I made on the annotations:

  • I think the Warp distribution sets the genre conventions codes well during the first 8 seconds of the trailer. This is because Warp distributes a certain kind of movie, which is fresh, independent  films. Warp also looks a new talent and has a loyal audience, making me think this would be the best distributor for A Question of Identity.
  • The scene where we see Sydney and The Ghost conversing fits the genre conventions of an action film. We have low-key lighting in a dingy looking warehouse, showing the danger of the location. This is also emphasised by The Ghost's harsh language showing how he is a ruthless man.
  • We see Aaron being led by police officer, this creates tension as the audience wonders what his crime could be. The drums in the soundtrack intensify to add to the tension of this scene.
  • There is a high angle shot of Sydney with her expensive bags, there is a sepia like filter over the picture, showing how this must be a flashback, before she died. This shot adds depth to Sydney as the audience begins to learn more about her such as her like of expensive brands.
  • There is a quick flash of a scene showing The Ghost and Sydney talking. This adds to the tension of trailer along with keeping to the codes and conventions of a thriller trailer, as it makes it more fast pace. Along with this it also intrigues the audience more, drawing them it and grabbing their attention.
  • The three zoom in on the documents with the flash between them shows the audience how important these documents are. The flashes in the trailer are usually used to do with The Ghost, hinting subtly to the audience that these documents could have something to do with him. The soundtrack increased to add to the tension and create a fast pace to the action trailer.
  • The time lapse in crucially in showing the location, London. This lets the audience know where this is all set along with showing them the fact that time is going by quickly, and every second is crucial.
  • The low-cut angle of the scene where The Ghost raises a gun to the migrant shows he is dominant and has the power, the fast scene also helps create a keep, tense pace to the action. It also shows the violence that usually happens in an action film.
  • The audience see's a wide shot of Aaron as he goes to the place of his sister's death. This shot then fades into Sydney and The Ghost arguing, and back to Aaron looking sad and mourning the death of his sister. This lets the audience connect with Aaron and lets them sympathise as we see how much he is suffering. The drums in the soundtrack intensify the scene.
  • Two jump cuts are featured as we see Aaron tied up and The Ghost pouring gasoline around him. The two jump cuts are to create suspense and keep the action quick to make sure the audience is intrigued. Aaron shows a lack of control and we see his vulnerability as he is tied up and The Ghost is towering over him, showing his dominance of power. We hear a heavy beat, low pitch drum at the beginning of the shot and at the second jump cut, this is to emphases the danger Aaron is in and draw the audience in. The wide shot is used so the audience can see the location and how it is clearly isolated. This all creates to the suspense and adds to the action that the audience would expect to see due to the codes and convention of an action trailer. There is then a hard cut to black and we see a match being lit, the low key lighting adds to the suspense and danger which is needed in an action trailer. The smoke is used to create an eeriness and make the audience worry for what will happen next, and then they will be more likely to see the film. The title is then shown through the match so the audience is still intrigued and curious, this means they will be more likely to remember the film name. As the title is presented just after their curiosity will rise as they wonder what will happen to Aaron. The text then fades to white to make it more legible. The soundtrack fades to create suspense and eeriness, and heightening the audience's curiosity and worry for Aaron.
